Highlights
BIS Hallmarking System
BIS hallmarking certifies purity of gold and silver jewellery through BIS Standard Mark, purity/fineness mark, and HUID code.
Massive Expansion Since 2021
Mandatory gold hallmarking expanded from 256 to 392 districts; registered jewellers grew 5.5 times to 2,36,624.
Digital Traceability
HUID codes, API-based XRF integration, Transfer HUID facility, and BIS CARE App ensure end-to-end digital tracking and consumer verification.
Background
Gold has cultural and economic significance in India, often used as a hedge against inflation and collateral for loans. However, adulteration and misrepresentation of purity were common. The voluntary Hallmarking Scheme was launched in 2000 for gold and in 2005 for silver, with BIS as the sole implementing agency. To strengthen consumer protection, gold hallmarking was made mandatory from 23 June 2021.
Key Analysis and Impact
The mandatory hallmarking regime has transformed the gold jewellery market. Over 65 crore gold articles hallmarked with HUID, and a 5.5-fold increase in registered jewellers, indicate high compliance. Digital initiatives like API-based XRF machines (since 1 September 2024), automatic weight capture, and Transfer HUID (since 1 June 2026) have reduced manual errors and fraud. The BIS CARE App empowers consumers to verify purity in real-time. For silver, mandatory HUID from 1 September 2025 has brought over 90 lakh articles under the system.
Way Forward
BIS is likely to expand hallmarking to more districts and possibly make silver hallmarking mandatory in the future. Further integration of AI for surveillance and expansion of consumer awareness programmes (1,582 programmes in 7 months of 2026) will strengthen trust. The Transfer HUID facility may be extended to all jewellers to ensure complete traceability in the secondary market.

Hallmarking is like a purity certificate for gold and silver jewellery. When you buy a hallmarked item, the BIS mark, a purity number (like 22K916), and a unique code (HUID) are stamped on it. You can check this code on the free BIS CARE App to see if the jewellery is really as pure as claimed. Since 2021, hallmarking has become mandatory for gold, and over 65 crore gold items have been certified.
